Set Description and Contents:
In the liberal social atmosphere of Paris, Tanner’s painting matured as he gained self-confidence. The deeply felt religious paintings he started producing in the 1890s were a combination of the brilliant palette of the Impressionists, the observed dramatic light of Realism, and the flat color areas of Symbolism. The French government bought one of his paintings in 1897, making him the first African American artist to gain international recognition.
