DIGITAL IMAGE SET: Meiji Ukiyo-e Masters Gekko and Zeshin (JPEG)

(new acquisitions 2010)

The Meiji period was a time of modernization and opening to western trade for Japan. Artists working during this time were introduced to European art, which can be seen both stylistically and technically. Both Ogata Gekko and Shibata Zeshin are known for continuing Japanese artistic traditions, while also embracing modernization. Gekko primarily produced genre scenes, landscapes, and animal portraits. Zeshin worked mostly in lacquer, although he also painted and produced prints that combined traditional subjects with modern techniques.
