About the Author

Hermon Joyner

Hermon Joyner is a freelance photographer and author based in Portland, OR. His photographs have been featured in more than 100 exhibitions across the United States. His work has also been published in several major photography magazines, including a special edition of Docu magazine in 2024. Joyner received his BS in Arts and Letters and his MS in Professional Writing from Portland State University in Portland, OR. He was awarded an artist’s grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council in Portland, OR, in 2003 for his project Visual/Haiku, a hand-bound artist’s book of original photographs and poetry about Japanese gardens. He was a regular contributor to PhotoMedia magazine, writing award-winning profiles of photography luminaries, including William Albert Allard, Albert Watson, and Steve McCurry. Along with Kathleen Monaghan, Joyner is the co-author of Focus on Photography (first edition 2007, second edition 2016), a high school program for teaching and learning commercial and fine art photography.
